Why Printed Packaging Scuffs —and Which Coatings Help

A printed carton can look excellent when it leaves the press and still arrive at the packing line, distribution center, or retail shelf with visible marks.

Dark areas may show pale streaks. Matte surfaces may develop shiny spots. Ink can transfer from one package to another, and corners may appear scratched after products are packed into a case. These problems are often grouped under one term: scuffing.

Printed packaging scuffs when its surface experiences friction, abrasion, pressure, or repeated contact strong enough to mark the coating, disturb the ink film, or expose the paper beneath it. The damage can occur during converting, product pack-out, case packing, transportation, store replenishment, or shopper handling.

The solution is not always to apply the strongest coating available. A coating must be compatible with the ink, paperboard, printing method, folding process, product, and desired appearance. Pack-out friction and transportation conditions also need to be addressed. Even a durable surface can become damaged when cartons are forced tightly against one another or repeatedly vibrate inside a shipping case.

The exposed top sheet still needs to be designed, printed, coated, converted, packed, and tested for the conditions it will encounter.

What Does Packaging Scuffing Look Like?

Scuff damage can appear in several forms:

  • Surface Scuffing: Marks that look lighter, darker, or shinier.
  • Ink Rub-Off: Friction wearing away or transferring the printed ink film.
  • Scratching: Narrow, concentrated marks from edges, dust, or tools.
  • Burnishing/Polishing: Matte surfaces becoming shiny under friction.
  • Color Transfer: Inks migrating when stacked face-to-face under pressure.

TAPPI's T 830 test method evaluates the rub and scuff resistance of containerboard and fiber surfaces. Dark designs (black, navy, deep green) do not scuff more than light layouts, but they present a higher visual contrast when white paper fibers become exposed underneath, making protective coatings critical.

Which Packaging Coatings Help?

1. Press Varnish

Clear printed layers applied like ink, press varnishes adjust gloss and offer basic protection. While economical, standard varnishes provide less scuff resistance than aqueous or UV coatings on dark, high-contact areas.

2. Aqueous Coatings

Water-based aqueous coatings applied inline provide a practical balance of rub protection, matte or gloss aesthetics, and drying efficiency. High-rub aqueous coatings are ideal for consumer folding cartons.

3. UV Coatings

UV coatings cure instantly under ultraviolet energy, forming a hard, high-gloss surface with excellent abrasion resistance. However, because the cured layer is hard, scoring and folding must be planned carefully to prevent brittle cracking at fold scores.

4. Film Lamination

Bonding a thin protective film (gloss, matte, or soft-touch) to the printed paperboard offers maximum scuff and scratch protection. Specialty anti-scuff laminates prevent polishing marks on premium cosmetic or electronics boxes, though they add process complexity and cost.

Single-Face Lamination (SFL) & Scuffing

In single-face lamination, printed top sheets are combined with fluted mediums to build structural microcorrugated packaging. SFL offers high-end graphics and structural integrity, but it does not inherently prevent scuffs. The exposed top sheet still requires compatible high-rub aqueous, UV, or film lamination to resist shipping vibration and pack-out friction.
